When Germany's startup hubs are mentioned, Dresden rarely makes the shortlist. Yet the numbers suggest Saxony is becoming harder to ignore: 698 active startups, two unicorns and more than €1 billion in startup funding raised since 2020, according to the Sachsen Startup Monitor 2025. A significant share of that activity is concentrated in Dresden, and the reason is unusually physical. The city has become one of Europe's most concentrated microelectronics locations. The industrial partners, suppliers and research institutions that founders elsewhere may need to travel across Europe to reach are clustered in and around the city: Infineon, Bosch, GlobalFoundries and, increasingly, TSMC's European joint venture.
What is less visible from the outside is that the startup ecosystem is increasingly organized around a sequence: students are introduced to entrepreneurship, researchers receive support on intellectual property and company formation, early-stage teams move into incubators and later to accelerators. For deep-tech and hardware founders in particular, the region now offers something relatively rare: a support network connected directly to industrial infrastructure.
Here is an overview of the initiatives and organizations supporting founders along this journey. From first entrepreneurial steps to scaling deep-tech ventures.
YETI Fellowship: the student entry point
For students who are curious about entrepreneurship but do not yet have a company or even a fixed idea, the YETI Fellowship is one of the earliest entry points. The program runs for 18 months across three semesters. It is free to join. Participants work on real projects, develop ideas from scratch and become part of a founder community before they have to commit to launching a startup. Originally based in Dresden, YETI expanded to Leipzig in 2025.
TUD|excite and dresden|exists: the university transfer layer
TUD|excite, the TUD Excellence Center for Innovation, Transfer and Entrepreneurship, is a center within TU Dresden. Its role is not to run a public-facing accelerator cohort, but to help move university research toward application. That includes patent and IP management, technology transfer, industry partnerships, spin-off support and entrepreneurship education. In practice, TUD|excite is part of the machinery that allows university inventions to become market-facing technologies.
launchhub42: the deep-tech incubator on campus
launchhub42 is a startup incubator run jointly by TU Dresden and TU Munich, located directly on the TU Dresden campus. It focuses on startups in communication, sensing and computing, closely linked to the 6G-life research cluster, and works with around 20 teams. In August 2024 it opened the launchhub42 ComSpace next to the Barkhausen Building, a dedicated space for offices, demonstrations and exchange between founders, researchers and investors. Through its StartUpConnect program, launchhub42 also provides equity-free funding for early-stage teams.
Startup Factory boOst: the umbrella for Central Germany
The newest layer in the system is boOst, the startup factory for Central Germany, intended to connect universities, accelerators, investors and industrial partners across Saxony and Thuringia. In July 2025, it was selected in the German government's EXIST Startup Factories flagship competition, securing up to €10 million in federal funding, to be matched by at least the same amount from industry partners including Infineon, ZEISS, Bosch and Volkswagen. boOst runs its own programs, including a tech incubator, entrepreneurship education and international landing pads. Its first incubator cohort ran in early 2026 across Dresden, Leipzig and Jena, with ten universities feeding into the program.
Seed: turning a team into a funded company
ExciteLab: Dresden's deep-tech innovation hub
Once a company exists, the question shifts from formation to traction. ExiteLab offers, among other things, a six-month accelerator for startups in robotics, sensors, the IOT, semiconductors and quantum technologies. The program is free, takes no equity and is run by the SpinLab Group. But ExciteLab is not only a startup program. It also works with established companies through services such as venture clienting, helping industrial partners identify and test startup technologies that could solve business or production challenges. That dual role matters in Dresden: the region’s strength lies not only in producing startups, but in connecting them quickly with research networks, engineering expertise and potential industrial customers such as Infineon, ZEISS and VON ARDENNE.
TGFS, MBG Sachsen and BAM!: the capital side of the seed phase
Programs alone do not fund a company, and Dresden founders do not have to leave the region for their first institutional money. The TGFS Technologiegründerfonds Sachsen is the leading startup financier in the Free State, providing venture capital and management support in the seed and startup phase. First launched in 2008 by the Free State of Saxony and Saxon financial institutions, it has backed more than 100 startups and entered its third fund generation in 2023, with a total volume of over €240 million.
The MBG Sachsen complements this with silent and direct participations that strengthen a young company's equity base. Its Saxony Angel Venture Fonds, introduced in 2023, adds a pre-seed instrument of up to €100,000 that invests alongside business angels. Those angels, in turn, have their own structure: BAM! Business Angels Mitteldeutschland, founded in Leipzig in 2024, is the first private, cross-state angel network in the region, connecting private investors from Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia with early-stage teams.
Scale-up: from first customers to industrial scale
Ignite Next: the newest arrival
The most recent addition to Dresden's landscape addresses a gap that European deep tech has struggled with for years: the step from funded startup to industrial-scale company. Ignite Next, launched in December 2025 by the former leadership team of the Intel Ignite program, chose Dresden as its headquarters. The program is non-dilutive and works with technology partners including Infineon, Intel and Synopsys, supported by a network of more than 300 senior industry mentors.
HighTech Startbahn: the growth network
The HighTech Startbahn has supported young high-tech companies in the post-founding phase since 2010, with a focus on financing, sales and the active brokering of contacts to mentors, investors and industrial partners. Its best-known format is the annual Hightech Venture Days, where selected European high-tech startups meet international investors in Dresden.
Smart Systems Hub: the industry interface
The Smart Systems Hub sits at the edge of the startup system rather than inside it. As one of the largest innovation centers for industrial automation in Europe, with a network of over 950 partners, its co-innovation formats are aimed primarily at established companies and the Mittelstand. For growing startups, however, it can serve as a route to exactly those industrial customers, which is why it is part of any complete picture of the Dresden ecosystem.
Dresden is no longer a hidden player
Dresden has developed into a credible second-tier startup hub with distinct profiles, growing support structures and increasingly visible links between founders, research institutions, investors and industry. That does not mean Dresden is about to replace Berlin or Munich. It is not trying to. Its relevance lies elsewhere. Like other strong second-tier ecosystems in Europe, Dresden offers founders a different proposition: closer access to industrial customers, lower noise, strong university pipelines and specialized support.
